The Next Generation of Logix

The Logix™ control series has been on the market for about one year with great market acceptance of the 740 and 760 standard series controllers. GE Infrastructure is excited to announce the release of the 742 and 762 Generation II Logix controllers in response to the professional dealers’ desire for more versatility. These advanced controllers provide all of the features that are expected by today’s professional dealers. The 742 and 762 controllers feature a unique set of options that make this a great controller for light commercial and residential applications. These features include:

  • Full Control – the ability to adjust each of the seven regeneration cycles.
  • Still Simple – the 742/762 still features the “no salt tables needed” capacity and regenerant input features, the same as the 740/760 controls.
  • A unique no-salt detector software feature – actually senses regenerant in the brine line and tells the end user when the brine tank is empty. (optional brine detector controller is necessary).
  • Filter or Conditioner – each control can easily be switched from aconditioner to 3-cycle filter control with two easy programming steps. There is no need to switch cams.
  • Advanced water-usage history values review level.
  • Current flow rate displayed during normal operation.

The 742 & 762 controllers are designed to work with each of the Noryl™ Autotrol™ brand control valves, including the 255, 263, 268, 278 and Magnum Cv™ bodies. These are set up to allow the user to use one controller and switch between any of these Autotrol valves.

The 742 controller is the advanced time-clock chronometric controller, featuring either simple 7-day regeneration, or up to 99-day interval regeneration options. In addition, the 742 controller can receive a simple dry-contact input signal to initiate a regeneration from an outside controller source, making it a great option for light C&I applications.

The 762 controller is the advanced metered-demand volumetric controller. The controller can be programmed to take a meter signal from a standard Autotrol brand turbine, or from any standard outside metering device.

The 742/762 controllers are interchangeable with any standard Logix controllers, making them a great upgrade for previously installed systems. In addition, they are easily identified by a lighter gray color than the standard 740/760 controllers.

740/760 Logix Controllers

  • Simplified programming: unit size and regenerant level selections of low (L), standard (S), and high (H).
  • Computer automatically selects optimum regeneration cycle.
  • Black face plate bezel.

742/762 Logix Controllers

  • Fully adjustable regeneration cycles.
  • Dealer can program exactly for the application.
  • Gray face plate bezel.

The Generation II Logix 742/762 controllers will be available at the end of July 2005. Be sure to ask your supplier about how you can try out one of these great new controllers.

Logix Outdoor Cover ...Color Change to Almond

Because of customer’s requests, we have changed the color of the Logix outdoor cover and skirts from light gray to almond. The almond components will be available after July 1, 2005. The change allows the cover and skirts to “blend in” with popular molded cabinets. The outdoor cover with front panel provides protection for systems that are installed outdoors. The lower skirts for the 255 & Performa valves protect the drive motor and control from moisture and insects. The Logix almond cover can also be ordered without the front panel and provides an aesthetically appealing alternative to the standard Logix dark gray indoor cover. Note: the front panel is not removable.

New part numbers have been assigned to the almond components to prevent confusion during the changeover. The light grey cover components will be discontinued. The table below cross-references the almond components to the discontinued, light gray counterparts.

Logix Tips — Cold Weather Controllers

The Logix features a high-end LCD display to show all of the unique Logix features. Because an LCD is a “Liquid Crystal Display,” it can be affected by cold weather when not plugged in. If exposed to cold weather under freezing temperatures, the liquid inside of the display may become sluggish and slow to respond when initially plugged in. We heard from a number of you in the Midwest this past winter after controls were left in trucks overnight waiting to be installed the next morning.

If you plug in a cold control, the display should respond within a few seconds to one minute. We have found that most dealers plug in the controller right away when they arrive at the job site and let the controller warm-up while they plumb the system. When they get to the programming phase, the controller is ready to go. In addition, we have put in a controller improvement featuring an upgraded resistor that will allow the controller to warm up even quicker. The cold weather should have no affect on the display once it’s plugged-in and warmed up.

Tanks for the Memories

GE Infrastructure is excited to announce that we are now able to provide our customers with another great tool in offering the highest quality products. The GE Professional Series tanks are now available, bringing a choice to the market for high-quality, affordable pressure vessels.

The GE Professional Series tanks are available to our OEM manufacturers for building complete systems offering both a GE branded component control valve, as well as a GE-branded component pressure vessel. These GE Professional Series tanks are high quality pressure vessels and are manufactured using “completely seamless molding technology”. The one-piece blow-molded polyethylene liner eliminates the need for bonding or welding of internal seams where leaks can often occur with competitive tank brands. The valve O-ring seals directly on the tank liner, which encompasses the threaded inlet. This greatly reduces the risk of leaks.

All tanks are ANSI/NSF 44 certified and are backed by our 10-year residential and 5-year commercial tank warranty.

The GE Professional Series tanks product offering consists of pressure vessels ranging from 7-inch through 36-inch diameter that come in standard colors of Natural, Blue, Black, Almond and Gray.

The GE Brand name is labeled on each tank so you can be assured that this product is of the best quality. Be sure to insist on a complete GE component solution from your OEM and request that your systems feature the GE Professional Series tanks!

What Do You Do With A POU Element That Makes 150 Gallons A Day?

When we tell our customers that we have a 2-inch x 12-inch standard residential size element that fits in a standard housing, they say, “That is great!”, then they pause and say “What do you do with 150 gallons a day for a household system?” There are multiple answers to that question.

  • Use it in a low-pressure application. At 30 psi the TLC-150 will produce 75 gallons of water at approximately 93% rejection.
  • Use the TLC-150 for a demo unit that will actually allow a customer to fill a cup with a stream of water from their tap and taste the difference in tap vs RO water.
  • Use the TLC-150 for multi-tap applications such as a business with multiple coolers or taps.
  • Use TLC-150 for a small commercial system or team up a couple of elements for more flow on low-pressure applications

You are only limited by your imagination and creativity for applications of the TLC-150. We have configured this element for ease of use by offering it in three variations:

TLC-150 element, GE p/n 1233581
TLC-150 Encapsulated w/check valve, GE p/n 1234409
TLC-150 Encapsulated w/check valve and flow control, GE p/n 1234408

Ask your local OEM for pricing and we are sure that they can incorporate the TLC-150 into a system to meet your unique needs.

External Drain Line Flow Controls, 1.3 GPM to 5.3 GPM

We are pleased to announce the availability of external drain line flow controls for the Performa valves. These flow controls are available in flow rates from 1.3 gpm to 5.3 gpm. The external drain line flow controls are designed for quick installation onto the ¾-inch NPT drain line fitting of the Performa valve. The existing backwash flow control is removed and replaced by cap P/N 1000269. These flow controls reduce water usage during the fast rinse cycle(s) of the Performa valves. Another benefit is the quieter operation during regeneration.

One-Inch Meter Module...A Great Troubleshooting Tool!

Did you know that our one-inch meter module makes a great trouble shooting tool? One of the most common service calls for on-demand initiated “metered” systems is “my system is not
regenerating”. With our one-inch meter module you can quickly determine if the control or the meter is not working properly. First confirm that the control is not indicating service flow. Listed below are the following GE Autotrol Brand controls and their flow indications:

460i control………...Blinking Dot
760 control………….Faucet Icon
960 control………….Blinking Colon
962 control………….Actual flow rate, numerically

Once you have determined that the control is not registering service flow rate, simply disconnect the meter cable from the outlet of the valve body. Insert the meter cable into the one-inch meter module. Blow through the meter module. If the control indicates flow rate, then the issue is mechanical and the meter wheel will need to be removed and cleaned of debris. If the control does not register flow rate then the issue is electrical, and the control or meter cable will need to be replaced. Please contact your OEM to order the one-inch meter module.

Silicone Lubricants

Always use a 100% silicone based lubricant when servicing GE Autotrol™ brand valves. Application of nonsilicone lubricants, specifically petroleum-based lubricants, will void the manufacturer's warranty, weaken the Noryl plastic, and result in costly service calls. Several of the components require a small amount of silicone lubricant applied to the O-rings before re-installing into the valve body. Shown below are the lubrication points for the Performa Valve:

NSF-61 approved silicone lubricant is available through your OEM in the following packages:

New Faucet

A sleek new chrome-plated faucet and air gap are now available for the Merlin RO system. The new removable and replaceable air gap module has been optimized for quiet and leak-free operation. A new wing nut allows under-the-sink faucet installations without tools. Look for this new faucet and air gap combination in future Merlin shipments. The new faucet and air gap combination, P/N 1254894, will also be available for purchase through your OEM.

Merlin Flush Kit Available

The Merlin continuous flow Reverse Osmosis (RO) system has many options and features that differentiate it from other RO systems. One of these options, the flush kit, allows users to reduce the effects of Salt Diffusion, also known as TDS creep. TDS creep, a phenomenon that occurs with all RO systems, causes a rise in product water TDS when RO systems are not in use. As a result, the rejection at system start-up is often less than the true capabilities of the RO system. The Merlin flush kit allows installers to lessen TDS creep resulting in better quality water when the system is used after periods of inactivity.

The Merlin flush kit includes an RO storage tank, a base to hold the tank upright, ¼-inch John Guest tubing, and a ¼-inch tank valve fitting. The tubing is connected to the light blue ¼-inch elbow connection on the Merlin. A series of check valves within the Merlin manifold automatically redirect product water into the tank before the Merlin is shut-down. The pressurized tank then forces the product water across the membranes, flushing the high TDS concentrate water to drain. For proper operation, the tank should hold an air precharge of 8 to 10 psi.

The recommended component part numbers for installations with inlet water containing 750 mg/L TDS or less are:

RO-120 storage tank manufactured by PA-E (8 Liter RO storage tank)
¼-inch tubing, part number PE08B10500FB manufactured by John Guest
¼-inch tank valve fitting, part number PPSV500822W manufactured by John Guest

Installations with inlet water containing more than 750 mg/L TDS may require a larger storage tank. Larger tanks will create a more complete system flush and therefore will allow less TDS passage.

The flush kit is a great way to maintain a high standard of water quality for applications where a spike of TDS at system startup is not desired. For more information on salt diffusion and flush kit operation, please reference the Merlin Application Guide available from your OEM or on the internet at www.gewater.com

To purchase Merlin flush kits, please contact your RO storage tank supplier.
